CSU, Chico & The Going Organic Project Host Organic Farming & Food Conference
(October 18, 2007) Santa Cruz, CA – As part of CSU, Chico’s “This Way to Sustainability III” conference, the CCOF Foundation’s Going Organic project will host the 5th Annual Organic Farming and Food Conference on November 1, 2007, in BMU Room 210 from 8 am to 12 pm. Sessions will include: Sustainability of Organic Farming, Monitoring to Ensure Sustainable Management, and Social Sustainability of Organic Food Production.
The Organic Farming and Food Conference will be hosted by Fred Thomas, Project Manager for the Going Organic project, and Dr. Jennifer Ryder Fox, Dean of the School of Agriculture and Vice-Chair of the Organic Materials Review Board, who will also give a presentation on how organic plant protection materials are registered. Sessions will be given by John Carlon, an organic blueberry farmer, Cliff Kitayama, an organic citrus grower, and Greg Massa, and organic rice grower. Each will share perspectives on organic farming, sustainability, stewardship, and monitoring methods used to gauge overall success. Roger Ingram, Livestock Farm Advisor of Nevada and Placer Counties, will discuss economic monitoring to ensure sustainable management.
Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, A.G. Kawamura, will deliver the Keynote presentation for This Way to Sustainability III at 1 pm in the Bell Memorial Union. This exciting, four-day Sustainability Conference will offer a diverse lineup of informative breakout sessions for participants to enjoy, so come ready to learn about the many ways to achieve sustainability.
