Celebrate the Start of Summer With An Evening of Organic Beer and Wine Tasting in the Heart of the Bay Area Courtesy of CCOF

(March 12, 2010) Santa Cruz, CA – On June 11, 2010, for a second consecutive year, CCOF will partner with the Pruneyard in Campbell, CA to celebrate the start of summer with an evening of all-organic beer and wine tasting, live music, and a silent auction. Last year’s event boasted over 300 attendees who enjoyed the opportunity to taste the offerings of a dozen award winning organic breweries and wineries from throughout California at one central Bay Area locale. As a result of last year’s success, the event has been extended an extra hour and will run from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

The event provides Bay Area locals with a sneak peek at a number of award winning wines and the chance to talk direct to vintners who are leading the way in organic and sustainable grape growing and winemaking right on their doorstep. Those interested in exploring California’s different wine regions this season will be interested to learn about visiting some of the more off-the-beaten-track locales.

Returning participants include Bay Area local, Chance Creek Vineyards. Located with a perfect southwest exposure in the rocky bench lands of Redwood Valley, Chance Creek will be pouring their 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve and Sangiovese. From Napa, Adastra Wines will be bringing their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. Returnees from farther afield include Hagafen Cellars, who will be sampling their signature Lake County White Riesling, and fourth generation winemaker Terra Savia from Hopland, Mendocino County with their 2006 Blanc de Blancs and Meritage. Terra Savia winemaker, Jim Milone, says he is fortunate to be following in the footsteps of his great grandfather who emigrated from Italy as a young man and operated Hopland’s first winery until prohibition.

Beer drinkers will definitely be included in the festivities. Local participants include returning favorite Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery, which will sample an assortment of brews including their People’s Porter, IPA, and Dread Brown Ale. Also from Santa Cruz, Uncommon Brewers will be back again with their signature, ‘uncommon beer, for uncommon people,’ unfiltered and unpasteurized brews designed to grow over time as they age. New to the event is Napa Smith Brewery, certified by CCOF just last year, and will promote their organic IPA.

The aim of the event is to demonstrate to the consumer just how good organic beer and wines really are,” states Jane Baker, Director of Sales & Marketing at CCOF. “There is still a perception that organic wines don’t taste good, but that’s simply not true today. In fact, a recent, peer-reviewed study led by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) found that wines made from organically grown grapes averaged one point higher in Wine Spectator ratings than their conventionally produced counterparts of the same varietal, appellation and year. CCOF certified wines have won many awards”.

Those who like what they taste at the event will have the opportunity to bid on a variety of vendor donated items during the CCOF silent auction. Past silent auction items include organic beer and cheese gift baskets, cases of wine and private winery and brewery tours. Tickets for this event are $30 per person, including a commemorative wine glass. More information.
