CCOF Hosts Webinar on Methods for Teaching Organic Farming and Gardening

Join farmer-educator Christof Bernau from the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) at UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday, February 24, from 12-1 p.m. for a free webinar on farm-based experiential education. Bernau will discuss ways to use an array of strategies to engage your audience; build student, intern and apprentice capacity; and grow the next generation of farmers.

Drawing on 20 years of experience in farmer education, Bernau will talk about best practices and strategies to optimize farm-based agricultural learning. He will provide an overall view of the revised CASFS Teaching Organic Farming & Gardening manual. Then, building off of feedback from previous webinars and trainings on the use of the manual, he will focus on these key subject areas:

  • Matching learning goals and audience needs
  • Strategies for working with audiences with differing levels of experience
  • Balancing the dual goals of crop production and experiential education
  • Integrating a variety of modes of learning to reach your entire audience
  • Building connection, ownership, and responsibility in the process of skills acquisition
  • The importance of systems thinking and connecting specific topics to the whole farm system to deepen learning

Experiential education is a life-long learning process. By providing ample hands-on training, creating relevance, facilitating the transferability of knowledge, building structures for observation and reflection, and fostering leadership opportunities, farmer educators can both solidify current lessons and position your students for life-long independent learning.

Through this webinar, participants will gain new insights into how to best support their students’ acquisition and development of new agricultural skills and conceptual knowledge, as we work toward growing the next generation of famers who must simultaneously steward precious resources and work to feed an ever-growing population.
