Deadlines Approaching for NOSB Jacksonville Meeting

The deadlines to submit public comments and register for oral comments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) at their fall meeting in Jacksonville are approaching! It is critical that members of the organic community submit public comments on the substances up for re-listing or removal from the National List of Allowed & Prohibited Substances and the other NOSB agenda items. The votes and discussions in Jacksonville will impact future organic standards and substances allowed in organic production.
In total, 43 substances will be discussed at the fall meeting:
Crop scope substances:
  • Biodegradable biobased mulch film
  • Boric acid 
  • Sticky traps/barriers 
  • Copper sulfate 
  • Coppers, fixed 
  • Humic acids
  • Micronutrients: Soluble boron products
  • Micronutrients: Sulfates, carbonates, oxides, or silicates of zinc, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and cobalt 
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Lead salts 
  • Tobacco dust (nicotine sulfate) 

Handling scope substances:

  • Attapulgite
  • Bentonite
  • Diatomaceous earth
  • Nitrogen
  • Sodium carbonate
  • Acidified sodium chlorite
  • Calcium hypochlorite
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Chlorine dioxide
  • Magnesium chloride
  • Potassium acid tartrate
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Sodium phosphates
  • Casings
  • Konjac flour
  • Pectin (non-amidated forms only)

Livestock scope substances:

  • Calcium hypochlorite
  • Chlorine dioxide
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Chlorhexidine
  • Glucose
  • Oxytocin
  • Tolazoline
  • Copper sulfate
  • Lidocaine 
  • Procacine

Sumit Oral & Written Comments

Written comments are accepted via  using docket number AMS-NOP-17-0024-0001 until October 11, 2017.

NOSB will accept oral comments through a webinar on October 24, 2017 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Those interested in the webinar must register before October 11, 2017. If all speaking slots are taken, NOSB will host an additional webinar on October 26, 2017 from 1:004:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Complete the OTA Sunset Surveys 
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is compiling data for each substance up for Sunset Review through quick surveys. The information received in the surveys will help shape OTA’s public comments and will be submitted to NOSB. OTA has also created a guide on the inputs up for Sunset Review.
