Future Organic Farmer FFA Scholarships Open this Week!

Kimberly and Mufasa

The CCOF Foundation is proud to partner with the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) to offer 20 $1,000 scholarships for organic Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) grants. Now in its second year, the joint project between FFA and CCOF gives FFA students across the country the opportunity to learn how to grow organic food, raise organic animals, or conduct experiments about organic agriculture. Last year the CCOF Foundation was able to sponsor 10 scholarships through FFA. Read about all the 2014 winners.

Kimberly Vargas was one of those students. Kimberly is a high school student in rural Littlerock, California, and her $1,000 grant from the CCOF Foundation supported her project of raising an organic hog for the Antelope Valley Fair. When Kimberly ran into the issue of not being able to source an organic piglet, CCOF was able to connect her to long-time CCOF member John Teixeira of Lone Willow Ranch who had organic piglets on hand. Teixeira was able to share his wisdom about organic hog raising with

Kimberly and her FFA advisor Cynthia Nelson. Cynthia said that helping Kimberly raise organic hogs has been a learning opportunity for herself, Kimberly, and their FFA chapter. When we heard from Kimberly at the beginning of August, her hog (Mufasa) was weighing in at 230 pounds!

Do you have an FFA student in your life? Encourage them to apply for one of the organic SAE grants today!
