Hear from Student Parvati Brown about the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund's Impact

My interest in organic agriculture comes from a very personal place in my life. I grew up in a rural farming village in Nepal where my family practiced subsistence farming. As a kid, I watched my mother struggle constantly with the challenges of producing enough food to feed our family. Since then, I have come to understand the inherent link between environmental degradation and the cycle of poverty and how they affect the lives of women like my mother. As I dove deeper into this concept, it became clear to me that a more holistic approach to agriculture is a necessity rather than a luxury. This period in my life has had a major impact on my decision to pursue an education in organic agriculture.

Currently, I am working toward acquiring an associate of science degree in general horticulture and crop production from Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, California. My ultimate goal is to work toward introducing culturally, geographically, and economically feasible farming techniques to enhance food security in my village.

The CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund award has been a crucial factor in helping me with school and fulfilling my lifelong goals.

Receiving the Future Organic Farmer Grant has made it possible for me to pursue my education. Having my educational expenses paid for gives me the luxury to go to school full time. The grant has made it possible for me to successfully complete the coursework and credentials required for my degree. Most importantly, the grant has given me the opportunity to acquire hands-on skills and knowledge in organic farming which will aid in my future endeavors. My plan at this stage is to complete my associate degree as well as a skills certificate in sustainable and organic food production.

Thanks to the generosity of the CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund, my goals are moving forward, and I am one step closer to becoming an organic farmer.

Sincerely,

Parvati Brown
