Meet Dale (Phillip) Anneler: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

The Future Organic Farmer Grant winners were judged to have the strongest combination of commitment to leading a lifelong career in organic agriculture, investment and participation in the organic community, and dedication to growing the organic movement. Each grant recipient will receive $2,500 to apply toward their studies in organic agriculture.

In 2005 Dale (Phillip) Anneler's grandfather bought 40 acres of land in a rural area and put Anneler’s name on the deed. He always told Anneler that this land could pay for itself if he used his head and was smart. When his grandfather died in 2008 and his father fell ill, he began to see the importance of fresh organic produce in his diet. After a long battle, his father lost his fight with cancer and Philip decided it was time to use his head and be smart just like his grandfather said.

For the most part, Anneler has focused on using the land raising livestock and poultry rather than growing crops; today, Anneler is beginning to use the land for vegetable production. He is the market manager for the Chickasha Farmers’ Market and also participates in another nearby market. He hopes to increase production and extend his growing season to be able to participate in one or two more markets.

Anneler also plans to increase awareness of the importance of fresh organic food for the health and wellness of families, farms, and communities. To do this more effectively, Anneler is returning to school at Oklahoma State University to complete his associate degree in horticulture-sustainable crop production.
