Meet Haleigh Jones: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

The Future Organic Farmer Grant winners were judged to have the strongest combination of commitment to leading a lifelong career in organic agriculture, investment and participation in the organic community, and dedication to growing the organic movement. Each grant recipient will receive $2,500 to apply toward their studies in organic agriculture.

Haleigh Jones is an agriculture and environmental plant science major at California Polytechnic State University of San Luis Obispo. She was born and raised on the Central Coast of California in the Santa Maria Valley. Growing up, Jones was surrounded by conventional farming—as it is a huge part of the local economy—and she never really questioned the production techniques being practiced until she was introduced to organic farming.

Jones’ first ever farm job was on an organic farm as a production intern. Her experience on the farm was eye opening, and she fell in love with the practice. When she returned to Cal Poly the following fall quarter, Jones started taking classes in organic agriculture and working on the organic farm on campus to learn more about the science behind the ecological management strategies.

Through her experiences working in organic agriculture and her time at the university, her hope is to one day operate her own polyculture organic farm with field and nursery operations that are open to the public. She also wants to offer CSA membership boxes, farm tours, and educational opportunities for the community to learn about agriculture and sustainable farming.
