Meet Jacob Schreiber: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

Since 2014, the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund has partnered with the National FFA Organization to give grants to high school students who are interested in conducting organic Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects. In collaboration with an FFA advisor, these students design organic agricultural projects to conduct over the course of a year. Students are challenged to involve other students, mentors, and members of their community to ensure their project’s success. Visit our blog each week to read about these future organic farmers’ SAE projects in their own words.

Applications for organic grants for SAE projects are now being accepted! Applications are due November 15, 2018. Find out how to apply for your own Future Organic Farmer Grant.

Jacob Schreiber

My Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project plan is to purchase two of my father's organically-bred raised heifers to start my own herd.

My father has been raising organic beef for over 10 years. The beef is grass fed, and all the rations meet organic standards with the corn in the ration being organically grown. The beef is marketed as organically raised and most are sold privately to people who take them to the locker plant.

With two bred heifers due to calve in May of 2017, I will have a good start on my own herd. Because I can use my father's facilities and have him as my mentor, this SAE will be easily sustained.

Congratulations Jacob!
