Meet Maggie Burkett: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

Since 2014, the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund has partnered with the National FFA Organization to give grants to high school students who are interested in conducting organic Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects. In collaboration with an FFA advisor, these students design organic agricultural projects to conduct over the course of a year. Students are challenged to involve other students, mentors, and members of their community to ensure their project’s success. Visit our blog each week to read about these future organic farmers’ SAE projects in their own words.

Applications for organic grants for SAE projects are now being accepted! Applications are due November 15, 2018. Find out how to apply for your own Future Organic Farmer Grant.

Maggie Burkett

For my Supervised Agricultural Experience project, I am taking manure from the two horses I have and composting it. I started this during the winter of 2015, when I enrolled in an agriculture class. The manure composts in large pallets that are five feet tall and four feet wide. Once it finally composts to the degree desired, I fill 10-pound bags and sell them for $2 per bag. My customers left wonderful notes asking me to continue to sell the manure so they can use it to fertilize their gardens. I will use some of the money from this grant to buy a Stall Butler, which is a machine that helps to separate the manure better than it can be done by hand.

Congratulations Maggie!
