Meet Washington Middle School: A Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund Recipient

Since 2014, the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund has partnered with the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom to administer the Look at Agriculture…Organically! grant program for K-8 teachers who teach their students about organic in the classroom. Each week, visit our blog to hear from the teachers who received Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund grants for their schools about the projects they funded.

Washington Middle School
Salinas, California

This year, all the pea plants in the school garden were killed by birds, but birds can be both an asset and hinderance for organic gardeners. While some birds damage crops by eating them, there are many others that help control insect pests that damage crops. Using our school garden as the model for an organic farm, students explored the impact of birds on organic crops through direct observation, data collection, and research into various species’ natural history. Students then researched bird behavior and designed and tested different non-lethal, organic methods for reducing bird damage to crops while still encouraging insect eaters.

Thank you to Washington Middle School for sharing your organic project!

Please join us in congratulating the recipients of the CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grants.
