Mexico Program Update

Mexico’s organic sector continues to evolve and grow. CCOF recently attended a meeting for organic certifiers approved by the Mexican government to certify to Mexico’s organic standards (LPO). The meeting was held in Oaxaca by SENASICA/SAGARPA, the agencies that oversee the Mexican organic program. Operations enrolled in the CCOF Mexico Compliance Program should be aware of the following updates:

  • Standards: Revisions to the standards are in progress. While we have no reason to anticipate significant changes that may affect CCOF-certified operations, no draft has yet been made public. CCOF encourages you to stay informed and participate during any opportunities for public comment. We will continue to communicate about this topic as we know more.
  • Labeling: SENASICA/SAGARPA indicated that they plan to step up enforcement of organic labeling requirements in the marketplace within Mexico. This is a good reminder that you must always obtain approval from CCOF for all of your organic product labels prior to marketing of your product. Send proofs of all labels to inbox@ccof.org.
  • Financial Resources: We are happy to share that grants are now available from the Mexican government to cover certain costs of organic production, including costs of certification, training, input materials, and labels bearing the SAGARPA Organic National Seal. The deadline for applications is September 30, 2016. For details, please visit www.gob.mx/sagarpa/acciones-y-programas/componente-de-certificacion-para....
