New Wild Farm Alliance Publication on Food Safety GAPs and Conservation

Wild Farm Alliance recently announced the release of the publication Co-Managing Farm Stewardship with Food Safety GAPs and Conservation Practices: A Grower's and Conservationist’s Handbook. The publication provides a resource for organic produce growers taking steps to address food safety on their farms, while continuing to conserve biodiversity and natural resources.

FDA Food Safety Regulations Encourage On-Farm Conservation

In November 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the final Produce Rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In the preamble of that FSMA Produce Rule, FDA stated, "We continue to encourage the co-management of food safety, conservation, and environmental protection."

For organic produce growers addressing food safety in light of the new federal regulations, Wild Farm Alliance’s publication provides information on how growers can address both food-safety and conservation priorities. The handbook highlights opportunities for using conservation practices to reduce the presence of pathogens on the farm, while identifying challenges that may need to be addressed when co-managing food safety and conservation.
