NOSB to Vote on 43 Sunset Substances in Jacksonville

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) will vote on the re-listing or removal of 43 substances on the National List of Allowed & Prohibited Substances (National List) at their meeting in Jacksonville, Florida on October 31 – November 2, 2017.
Members of the public are encouraged to submit public comments via using docket number AMS-NOP-17-0024-0001 until October 11, 2017. Additionally, oral comments will be accepted in-person and through a pre-meeting webinar.
NOSB reviews all substances on the National List every five years to determine their status in organic production. NOSB makes recommendations to remove substances from the National List using the criteria of the substance being harmful to human health or the environment, the substance no longer being necessary due to the availability of a non-synthetic alternative, or the substance’s use being inconsistent with organic farming and handling practices.
NOSB discussed the substances at their spring 2017 meeting in Denver, Colorado, and completed preliminary reviews for each. Members of the board will use that information and comments provided by the organic community to vote on relisting the materials or removing them from the National List. More information on the process can be found here.
