2023 Farm Manager Job Description and Application

Horton Road Organics is a five acre market garden located in the Oregon coast range outside Eugene. For over 30 years, we have integrated education, residential community development and conscientious hands on organic food production. The farm supplies mixed vegetables for three thriving farmers markets, restaurants, natural food stores as well as an online store. It is also the home of a rustic retreat space used by a Zen community led by one of the farm owners.

Our farm manager is responsible for leading a new group of apprentices in a wide range of farm activities and fostering a strong cohesive community. The manager is supported by the two long time farmers, Bill and Debra Seido, who also work day to day on the farm but maintain flexible schedules.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizing and leading day-to-day farm work. Sowing, planting, harvesting, and cultivating crops. Washing, packing and distributing produce. We have high quality standards.
  • Directing Apprentice Crew - Instruct, delegate and supervise apprentice. Give constructive feedback. Option to teach some of the classes in the 26 week curriculum.
  • Active Participant in Residential Community - Contribute to positive group dynamics and constructive conflict resolution. Harmony in the community is a core value.
  • Serving at Farmers Markets: Negotiable - Involvement based on manager preference, farm need and scheduling.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of two seasons of row crop farming experience on a production oriented farm.
  • Well organized
  • Capacity to maintain in house efficiency and quality standards
  • Excellent physical health
  • Teaching experience

  • Communication and conflict resolution skills

COMPENSATION

  • Hourly rate based on experience. Starting $16/hr.
  • Room and partial board; Private yurt, shared kitchen, some bulk foods.
  • Additional pay for Saturday farmers markets

COMMITMENT

April 1 – November 15. 44 hours per week, Monday-Friday, plus some Saturday markets. Subsequent seasons negotiable.
