The CCOF Foundation is pleased to partner with Community Alliance with Family Farmers and \u201cThe Farmers Beet<\/a>\u201d to launch our new podcast \u201cRadio Organic: Sound Bites from the Organic Community.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In our four-part pilot series, we\u2019ll chat briefly each week with long-time organic farmers about marketing techniques that have helped them run successful, resilient organic businesses. As a part of each interview, we ask our guest farmers what recommendations they have for newer farmers on managing resilient organic farms.<\/p>\n

In our third episode we spoke with Patricia Rodriguez of Rodriguez Farms<\/a> on how their farmers\u2019 market customers urged them to go organic and stuck by them as their farm figured out on their own how to grow super-tasty organic strawberries.<\/p>\n

During the interview Rodriguez commented that when she and her husband were transitioning their farm to organic over twenty years ago they had so much work to do they really didn\u2019t have time to look into hiring a consultant or find other resources to support their transition. While organic certification brought a great benefit to their farm in the end, their transition had its challenges, in part because they did it alone. \u00a0<\/p>\n

At the end of the interview Rodriguez offered the following wisdom to new farmers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cGo out to the different [organic] certifier organizations and just [look into] the different resources that are out there [to support organic farmers], because there’s so much now. You don’t have to struggle as much as we did. [They] have a lot of resources to guide you, or take you step by step through many different things that are needed to start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodriguez also emphasized the importance of soil heath and product quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I guess overall, if you’re doing this, then to do it right in terms of taking care of the soil and doing the best you can. Because that’s what’s going to make the difference when you’re out there with your product and people taste it, you know that it’ll be different, and it’ll be better.”<\/p>\n

\u201cVayan a las diferentes organizaciones certificadoras org\u00e1nicas y simplemente investiguen los diferentes recursos que existen para apoyar a los agricultores org\u00e1nicos, porque\u2026Hay tantas cosas ahora\u2026 No tienen que luchar tanto como nosotros\u2026 Tienen muchos recursos\u2026 para guiarlos, o acompa\u00f1arlos paso a paso, muchas cosas diferentes que se necesitan para comenzar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rodriguez tambi\u00e9n enfatiz\u00f3 la importancia de la salud de la tierra y la calidad del producto.<\/p>\n

\u201cY supongo que, en general, si est\u00e1n haciendo esto, deben hacerlo bien en t\u00e9rminos de cuidar la tierra y hacerlo lo mejor posible. Porque eso es lo que marcar\u00e1 la diferencia cuando est\u00e9n ah\u00ed con su producto y la gente lo pruebe, sabr\u00e1n que ser\u00e1 diferente y ser\u00e1 mejor”.<\/p>\n
