Reminder: Congressmen to Host Farm Bill Roundtable in Salinas

On Thursday, August 10, 2017, Congressman Jimmy Panetta and Congressman Jim Costa will host a roundtable discussion with Ranking Member Collin Peterson of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee.

Reminder: NOSB Comment Period Open through October 26

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting agenda and supporting materials are available for review and public comment. 

The NOSB will meet in St. Louis, Missouri, November 16-18, 2016. Written comments and signups for oral comment are due October 26. 

The NOSB will discuss and vote on many important topics, including: 

Represent Organic Fruit and Veg Interests on Federal Panel

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee is now accepting nominations to fill 10 seats. The Committee advises the Secretary of Agriculture on programs and services that USDA provides to the produce sector.
 
The Committee has a total of 25 members who represent the fruit and vegetable industry in the following capacities:
  • Growers/Producers
  • Wholesalers/ Distributors
  • Importers/Exporters
  • Processors
  • Farmers Market Managers
  • Food Hubs

Rodale Celebrates 35th Year of Farming Systems Trial

The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania began a side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming back in 1981. Today, the data collected in Rodale’s Farming Systems Trial show that organic farming produces competitive yields, builds higher levels of soil organic matter, retains more soil moisture, and is more profitable compared to conventional practices.

Sacramento Bee Publishes Article Supporting the California Organic Food and Farming Act

CCOF Board of Directors member and organic farmer Thaddeus Barsotti wrote an opinion piece supporting the California Organic Food and Farming Act (AB 1826) that was published in the Sacramento Bee on March 8, 2016.

Writing, “There is no group of people who wish to maintain the integrity of the certified organic label more than farmers,” Barsotti presented the reasons he supports CCOF’s effort to reform California’s State Organic Program through legislation.

Saving California Citrus: Asian Citrus Psyllid and Huanglongbing Update

The stakes are high in the fight to save California citrus from the threat of Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) and the disease it spreads, Huanglongbing (HLB) (also known as citrus greening). In Florida, more than 90 percent of commercial citrus trees are estimated to have HLB, and there has been a 70 percent decline in production, with an economic impact of $7.8 billion.

Senate Ag Committee Moves AB 1826 Closer to Becoming Law

“The bill is out, congratulations.”

California state senator Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton), chair of the California Senate Committee on Agriculture, spoke these words as the committee voted AB 1826, the California Organic Food and Farming Act, out of committee on June 21. AB 1826 now heads to the California Senate Appropriations Committee.

The California Organic Products Advisory Committee (COPAC) is a 15-member committee that advises the California Secretary of Agriculture on California’s State Organic Program’s enforcement activities. The members are made up of six producers (at least one producer of meat, fowl, fish, dairy products, or eggs); two processors; one wholesale distributor; two consumer representatives; one environmental representative; two technical representatives with scientific credentials related to agricultural chemicals, toxicology, or food science; and one retail representative.
