Brett Sutton and his partner have a goal of creating a market farm and catering business within the cooperative local food movement. This is Sutton’s second season of formal farming, and each year his knowledge and ambition has grown. He is committed to a career in local organic agriculture and fostering connections among farmers, chefs, bakers, brewers, fermenters, groceries, restaurants, and food banks. Sutton is passionate about food, the ecology that supports food systems, and building a more vibrant regional food culture.

Meet Brian Robbins & Get Involved with the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund

Brian Robbins is an intern at Fiddlehead Farm in Corbett, Oregon through Rogue Farm Corps. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to train on a diversified, organic mixed veggie farm while concurrently participating in sustainable agriculture seminar classes to bolster his experiential learning. Before starting his term with Rogue Farm Corps, Robbins worked as a farm-based educator at Slide Ranch, an organic farm and nature preserve in Muir Beach, California.

As part of a broader effort to increase organic farming, CCOF has partnered with Anheuser-Busch and their Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold Contract for Change program to provide financial support for farmers during the critical phase of transitioning to organic. My name is Celsa Ortega and I am 32 years old. I am from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. Growing up in the mountain ranges with my grandparents, we harvested a ‘milpa’ and I quickly grew fond of my grandparents love and dedication for agriculture. I now have four children, three boys and one girl ranging from 13 to five years old. My family and I arrived in the Salinas Valley in 2006, and we have since been field workers. I enjoyed working in Greenfield, CA harvesting cilantro by contract. This job provided well for my family with the high pay and hours that I was able to achieve.

The goal of our project was to expose five- and six-year-old kindergarten students to different varieties of organic fruits and vegetables. Many of our students are English Language Learners and have never seen most fruits and vegetables. During this school year we had successful tastings for a large variety of different fruits and vegetables. Many students tasted different foods that they had never had before.

Meet Dale (Phillip) Anneler: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

In 2005 Dale (Phillip) Anneler's grandfather bought 40 acres of land in a rural area and put Anneler’s name on the deed. He always told Anneler that this land could pay for itself if he used his head and was smart. When his grandfather died in 2008 and his father fell ill, he began to see the importance of fresh organic produce in his diet. After a long battle, his father lost his fight with cancer and Philip decided it was time to use his head and be smart just like his grandfather said.

Meet Daniel Donate: A CCOF Foundation Future Organic Farmer

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Agribusiness – California

Born and raised in Salinas, California, Daniel has been surrounded by agriculture his whole life. It was in Salinas that his parents made a living as laborers, but before coming to the United States, they tended their own lands in Mexico and grew strawberries as their primary crop. As a child, Daniel was enrolled in a children’s development program that gave him greater insight into the agricultural industry and left a lasting impression on him.

Meet Danielle Haefner & Get Involved with the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund

In the future, Danielle Haefner hopes to take over managing a small ag operation on her family's farmland in Wisconsin. While the land has been in her family for four generations, Haefner’s great-grandfather was the only family member to focus on agriculture. When he stopped raising black angus in the early 1970s, the farm was transitioned to large scale row crop production. Haefner would like to be the force that changes the path of this land for the better.
