Hydroponic Discussion at CCOF Board Meeting

The CCOF Board of Directors hosted a special discussion about hydroponic and container-based systems at their quarterly board meeting on February 18. 
 
Background
 
Over the last few years, disagreement has percolated throughout the organic community about hydroponic and container-based systems. Many organic producers feel frustrated that the National Organic Program (NOP) allows hydroponic operations to achieve certification because they believe that soil is essential to any organic production.

National Organic Program Releases Hydroponic and Aquaponic Task Force Report

In September of 2015, the National Organic Program appointed 16 members to a task force to explore hydroponic and aquaponic production practices and their alignment with the USDA organic regulations. The task force was charged with preparing a report to inform the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) as it determines the best path forward on hydroponic and aquaponic production systems.

Value-Added Producer Grants Webinar on May 6

CCOF partner organization National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is teaming up with USDA’s Rural Development to present a free webinar on Friday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT that explains Value-Added Producer Grants (VAPG) in depth and presents tips on how to successfully apply.

VAPG provide funds to individual agricultural producers, farmer or rancher cooperatives, and other producer groups to develop marketing plans or acquire working capital for a value-added enterprise.
