Akello Karamoko has always had a green thumb. He planted his first apple tree when he was 11 years old and sold peppermint and sage at his church at the age of 13. Farming as a career path was not on the minds of many of the children Karamoko grew up with in Detroit, Michigan, but he sought out programs to learn how to grow, plant, harvest, and sell his own organic crops. Her dream is to run and own an organic, sustainable farm that provides fresh products to a local community. She would like to be a part of the organic movement in order to improve the environment, global health, and food system.

Arthur Keculah is from Liberia and has been in the United States for over 15 years. During those years, he did not have a permanent job or housing, but since beginning the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Center for Agriculture and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) program, he has housing on campus.

Although Benjamin Meeks was born in Kenya, he grew up on a 35-acre farm in rural Appalachia.  As far back as Meeks can remember, he’s had a passion for farming and nature. The plants and animals on his family’s small farm in the Appalachian mountains were his backyard and the world he called home.
