Your experience in organic agriculture can help shape its future. USDA is accepting applications and nominations for three seats on the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), creating an opportunity for members of the CCOF community to bring their knowledge to a national conversation. Apply by December 28, 2026, to be considered for a five-year term beginning in January 2027 and ending in January 2032.
The NOSB advises the Secretary of Agriculture on implementing the Organic Foods Production Act and helps develop standards for substances used in organic production. For organic farmers, public interest advocates, and scientists, serving on the board is a meaningful way to contribute expertise, consider community input, and help inform recommendations affecting organic agriculture nationwide.
Who Can Apply?
USDA official call for applications and nominations identifies the following openings:
- Organic farmer: One individual who owns or operates an organic farming operation, or an employee of such an individual.
- Public or consumer interest representative: One individual representing a public interest or consumer interest group.
- Scientist: One individual with expertise in toxicology, ecology, or biochemistry.
USDA is also accepting applications for a candidate pool to fill unexpected vacancies. If your experience aligns with an open seat, consider applying or share this opportunity with someone in your network whose perspective could strengthen the board’s work.
What Does Serving Involve?
Board service requires substantial commitment. Members participate in monthly subcommittee calls, review materials and public comments, and help write discussion papers and proposals. They also attend two NOSB meetings each year, typically in April and October. USDA covers travel expenses for in-person meetings. Review the NOSB nomination process page for details about responsibilities and time commitments before applying.
