Free At-Home Well Test Kits Offered by California Dept of Pesticide Regulation

For farmers and rural property owners who rely on well water, knowing what’s in your water is essential for both your family’s health and your farm’s success. For the first time, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is offering a free well testing kit. This is in an attempt to increase the sampling of wells in areas across the entire state. This new program helps ensure that families and farmers have access to important information about the water they use every day.

Request a Sample Kit

To request one of the kits, send your name, address, and phone number to GWPP@cdpr.ca.gov or call (916) 445-2262. A Spanish- or English-speaking staff member will respond to arrange shipping a free well testing kit.

To arrange a group sampling/shipment, email DPR at the above address.

How it Works

You will receive a box with equipment and detailed instructions to collect and return water samples. DPR will cover costs for shipping samples and will provide you with results within 2-5 months.  Limited kits are available.

DPR scientists routinely monitor hundreds of wells throughout the state in agricultural areas. All test results are added to the Department’s database of groundwater sampling.

For more information on DPR’s environmental monitoring programs, including groundwater monitoring, see  DPR’s website: Environmental Monitoring – Department of Pesticide Regulation.
