AAFC Watermelon Festival- Saturday September 16, 2023

by Hanali Lopez-Tapia |

On Saturday, September 16th, the African American Farmers of California (AAFC) will be hosting the inaugural Watermelon Festival. This event offers an opportunity to celebrate Black farmers and African American farming heritage and culture, along with the harvest and bounty they reap at this time of year. In addition to celebrating, farmers will have the opportunity to tell their stories and share knowledge and experience with one another and the community. They will be selling local produce, including fresh fruit, vegetables, and eggs.

AAFC is currently engaged in a planning process to envision the future of both the organization and its programming, and is prioritizing the community in Fresno – that means you – in this planning process.

This event will allow AAFC to share its history/herstory as well as its current projects and programs. There will be an opportunity to provide feedback. Share what you envision and how you would like to engage with AAFC; with their beginner farmer training program as well as with their demonstration farm site.

Join a family fun day of activities and events, including acclaimed artist James Shields and the Watermelon Couch Experience. Take part in “Meet a Farmer” conversations, food demonstrations, children’s activities, a watermelon eating contest, AAFC Farm Stand, and more.
