Flooding Overwhelms Farmers in Midwest

Late winter storms immediately followed by warm spring weather has caused record flooding in much of the Midwest, including Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
 
The consequences have been catastrophic for family farmers and ranchers in the region; just in Nebraska, the cost to agriculture is estimated at $1 billion. These expenses are due in large part to crop loss, livestock deaths, and building damage.

FSMA Basics for Produce Growers

New federal food safety regulations are starting to take effect. If you grow, harvest, pack, or hold produce for human consumption you may need to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. Compliance dates for some produce farms start at the beginning of 2018.

Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund: Deadline Approaching for K-8 and Vocational/Higher Education Grants!

The deadlines for two categories of the CCOF Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund is fast approaching. In a statewide partnership with the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, kindergarten through eighth grade grants of $1,000 are currently available for organic classroom projects in California schools. Future Organic Farmer Grants Open for 2015

The CCOF Foundation is excited to re-open applications for the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund in 2015. Partnering again with the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom and the National FFA (Future Farmers of America), as well as hosting our own granting process, the Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund will be doubling our grants this year, giving away a total of $100,000 in 2015!

Future Organic Farmer Joshua Dransfield Featured in Rodale's Organic Life

Joshua Dransfield’s (2016 and 2017 Future Organic Farmer grant recipient) family farm was recently featured in Rodale’s Organic Life magazine. The Dransfields run Windsprings Farm, a small organic dairy in Gapmills, West Virginia. With the assistance of Organic Valley, a farmer-owned cooperative, the Dransfield family started their transition to organic four years ago.
