Produce Safety Alliance Factsheet on the FSMA Produce Safety Rule Documentation Requirements for Commercial Soil Amendment Suppliers

Under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, growers using a treated Biological Soil Amendment of Animal Origin (BSAAO), such as compost, are required to keep documentation that the amendment was properly treated, handled, and stored before being applied to a produce field. This documentation is especially important as growers prepare for FSMA Produce Safety Rule compliance and inspections. Though FDA does not have jurisdiction over companies that supply treated BSAAOs, suppliers should be prepared to provide this documentation to growers as needed.

Food safety inspections on produce farms are beginning this month, but there are still questions as to what the first round of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule inspections will look like. The fact that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be regulating farms for the first time is concerning for many produce farmers who have never interacted with FDA before on a regular basis.

Time, Money, Infrastructure to Comply with Food Safety Requirements Among Top Concerns for Produce Growers

Although local food producers are broadly committed to food safety on their operations, there are still some barriers to implementing food safety best practices, according to a needs assessment report released today by National Farmers Union Foundation’s Local Food Safety Collaborative (LFSC) and Cornell University.
 
The publication is the result of a multi-year, two-tiered effort.

Update 04/30/13:

The FDA has extended the comment period on the proposed food safety regulations until September 16.  This change was made as a result of numerous requests for more time to review the proposals, which are complex.  The additional time offers CCOF members an opportunity to provide more feedback about the proposals, areas for concerns, or suggested changes. We encourage you to continue sending us your feedback to policy@ccof.org.

USDA Finalizes GMO Labeling Rules

The USDA released its final rule for labeling genetically modified (GM) foods in December, two-and-a-half years after Congress passed a federal labeling law.
 
In a significant win for organic, all certified organic products, including the label categories “100% Organic”, “Organic”, and “Made with Organic” are exempt from the labeling requirement.
