Sonny Perdue Sworn in as Secretary of Agriculture

President Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Agriculture, George Erwin “Sonny” Perdue III has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn into office. As head of USDA, Secretary Perdue oversees the National Organic Program.

State Agencies to Host Groundwater Recharge Forum on November 8 in Sacramento

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), in collaboration with California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and other state entities, are hosting a Public Forum on Managed Groundwater Recharge to Support Sustainable Water Management. This all-day event will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center on November 8, 2017, and will bring together a variety of speakers to address recharge opportunities and issues.
 

State Bill to Launch California Climate & Agriculture Program

CalCAN is excited to announce our leadership in a newly introduced state bill called the Agriculture Climate Benefits Act, or Senate Bill 367. The bill was introduced by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Yolo County), and is co-sponsored by CalCAN and our coalition partner, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF).

State Organic Bill Clears California Assembly Floor, Moves to Senate

Due to overwhelming support from CCOF members, the California State Assembly voted to approve Assembly Bill (AB) 1826—the California Organic Food and Farming Act—and forward it to the California Senate.

State Water Board Delays Decision on Eastern San Joaquin Draft Order Until Feb. 7

The State Water Board postponed deliberation of its updated agricultural order for the Eastern San Joaquin River Watershed to February 7, when it will consider adoption of the order.
 

State Water Resources Control Board Adopts Cannabis Cultivation Requirements

The California State Water Resources Control Board adopted requirements for commercial and personal medical use cannabis cultivation. The requirements—the Cannabis Cultivation Policy—aim to reduce impacts from discharges of waste and water diversions. 
 
The Cannabis Cultivation Policy is available online. The policy should be referenced by cannabis cultivators who divert surface water to irrigate cannabis or plan to. 
 

Summary of the 2016 Spring National Organic Standards Board Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) met at the end of April to hear public comment, discuss the 2018 Sunset Materials, and vote on a number of proposals. NOSB also welcomed six new board members at the April meeting, including CCOF member Jesse Buie!

Summary of the Fall 2016 National Organic Standards Board Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) met in mid-November to hear public comment, vote on the 2018 Sunset Materials, and discuss and vote on various proposals. NOSB also held officer elections, and the board elected CCOF member Jesse Buie to serve as their new secretary. NOSB thanked outgoing members for their service, including CCOF member, inspector, and policy specialist Zea Sonnabend. Carmela Beck, representing Driscoll’s, also completed her term on the board.

Governor Jerry Brown and state legislators are debating the future of climate policy in California, and they need to hear from you about agriculture’s important role. These programs provide grants to farmers for practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon.
