NOSB public comment 2026

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) is now receiving public comment through May 4, 2026, at 8:59 PM PST / 11:59 PM EST. The NOSB is a federal advisory board that makes recommendations on organic standards and materials to the USDA Secretary. Click here to submit written comments.

What’s Being Discussed?

  • If you have experience with the following, we recommend you comment:
    • A petition to clarify whether chlorine materials are allowed for direct treatment of livestock drinking water.
    • A petition to allow pear ester as a synthetic material allowed for use in crop production.
    • A petition to include chitosan on the National List as a nonagricultural (nonorganic) substance. Chitosan, derived from fungi, is used as a processing aid in winemaking.
  • About 20 materials on the National List are up for review
