Updates to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances

by kta |

On March 23rd, 2022, the National Organic Program (NOP) issued a final rule to add two new substances to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List). The final rule also makes an administrative edit to §205.605.

  • Potassium Hypochlorite added to §205.601(a)(2) as an allowed chlorine material in crop production, for pre-harvest use in water for irrigation purposes. Residual chlorine in the irrigation water must not exceed the maximum residual disinfectant limit under the Safe Drinking Water Act (4 ppm).
  • Fatty Alcohols (C6, C8, C10 and/or C12) added to §205.601(k) for sucker control in organic tobacco production
  • Dairy Cultures removed from §205.605(a)

The final rule was effective April 22, 2022, and CCOF can now approve these materials for clients. See the Federal Register notice for details regarding the listing of these substances on the National List.  The removal of dairy cultures will not affect any currently allowed or future organic products. Dairy cultures will continue to be allowed under the listing for microorganisms at §205.605(a).

Materials must be approved by CCOF and included on your approved Organic System Plan (OSP) Materials List before use. If you would like to use these substances in your organic production, request addition by submitting a request to See our helpful Materials Guide for details.
