At this year’s annual meeting, a CCOF member asked for more information on the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act of 2022 (the Act). The goals of this law are:
- Reduce single-use plastic packaging and food service ware by 25%
- Recycle 65% of single-use plastic packaging and food service ware
- Ensure that 100% of single-use packaging and plastic food service ware is either recyclable or eligible to be labeled as compostable
Since this law went into effect in 2023, CalRecycle has:
- Approved Circular Action Alliance as the initial Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO). The PRO helps companies comply with their legal responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products.
- Appointed 16 members to an advisory board to support implementation of the Act and identify barriers and solutions to creating a circular economy.
- Proposed new rules to provide more detail on the requirements of the Act.
