CCOF International Programs

International Programs

Exporting Organic Product

Would you like to sell your products outside of the United States, Mexico or Canada? CCOF is an expert in organic exports and routinely works with foreign certifiers and governments to clarify requirements and address concerns. CCOF has several programs designed to review your operation and products for compliance to international markets:

These programs are available to clients who wish to export organic products or sell raw products that may be processed into a value-added product for international markets. Clients exporting to the EU, Switzerland, Japan or Korea need to enroll in one of these programs. Clients exporting to Canada or Mexico are encouraged to enroll.

When you enroll in our GMA, International Standard, or Mexico Compliance programs, your operation will be reviewed by CCOF staff to determine if your product meets the requirements of the importing markets. If compliant, these products will be listed as eligible for export on your Organic Certificate and you will be able to request the needed export documents from CCOF for your international shipments.

Program costs can be found in the CCOF Certification Services Program Manual.

Which Program is Right for You?

Global Market Access (GMA) enrollment is needed if you do any of the following:

  • Plan to export CCOF certified organic products to the EU, Switzerland, Japan, or Korea from the United States
  • Export CCOF certified organic products to the EU, Switzerland, Japan or United States from Canada
  • Design labels for products that will be sold in Canada, the EU, Switzerland, Japan or Korea
  • Produce wine that is exported to the EU or Switzerland from the United States
  • Grow crops or make products containing crops that appear on CCOF’s list of high risk crops (such as carrots, potatoes, or leafy greens) that are exported to Canada or used in products exported to Canada
  • Raise non-ruminant livestock, or make livestock products from non-ruminant livestock, that are exported to Canada
  • Raise livestock or make livestock products that are exported to the US from Canada
  • Sell CCOF certified organic products to any buyer who requires international verification certification

When you enroll in the GMA program CCOF will verify that your products and labels meet requirements for foreign markets where the U.S. National Organic Program or Canada Organic Regime has equivalence arrangements, including Canada, the EU, Switzerland, Japan, and Korea.

To enroll send a completed GMA Application to inbox@ccof.org. If you plan to export wine to the EU or Switzerland from the United States, you must also complete the GMA Wine Approval Application.

See CCOF’s GMA Manual and visit the Canada, European Union (EU) and Switzerland, Japan and Korea pages for more information.

International Standard program enrollment is needed if you:

  • Export to the EU or Switzerland from Mexico

When you enroll in the International Standard program CCOF will review your products and labels to our private standard, which has been granted equivalence to the EU and Swiss standards. CCOF is accredited under ISO Guide 17065 to offer compliance verification to Europe’s organic regulations, EEC 834/2007 and the Swiss Organic Ordinances for Mexico based operations shipping directly to the EU or Switzerland.

To enroll send a completed Grower or Handler International Standard Application to inbox@ccof.org.

See CCOF’s International Standard Program Manual and visit the European Union (EU) and Switzerland page for more information.

Mexico Compliance program enrollment is needed if you:

  • Grow organic product in Mexico

When you enroll in the Mexico Compliance Program CCOF will verify compliance with Mexican organic requirements in addition to USDA NOP Requirements. If you export to Mexico from the United States or Canada, enrollment is not mandatory at this time, but CCOF highly encourages operations to enroll in the MCP to ensure your labels are compliant and to make the transition smoother when Mexico announces enforcement of their standards on imports.

To enroll send a completed Mexico Compliance Program Application to inbox@ccof.org.

See CCOF’s Mexico Compliance Program Manual and visit the Mexico page for more information.

You do not need to enroll in any international program if you:

  • Grow crops which are exported by a certified organic buyer or exporter to the EU, Switzerland, Japan, or Korea, or used as ingredients in products exported by someone else to the EU, Switzerland, Japan, or Korea
  • Grow crops that are not on the CCOF list of high risk crops that are exported to Canada, or used as ingredients in products exported by someone else to Canada
  • Raise ruminant livestock that are exported to Canada, or make livestock products from ruminant livestock that are exported to Canada
